BEST Center is made up of dedicated staff and members. This is the latest spotlight in a series about our community.

“I am a Co-principal investigator for the BEST Center and the senior scientist for Building Technologies and Urban Systems at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. One of my important responsibilities each year is to plan BEST Center’s annual institute, where community college professors meet so that researchers can lecture about new technologies and future innovations. The annual institute and workshops are an amazing resource for instructors to launch a building auto system program, create lab curriculum, and talk to other professors with the same goals. That’s why I work with BEST Center. I love how our organization can help create advanced education to change peoples’ lives. I believe that the work that we are doing truly helps the environment by providing technicians with the knowledge to practice sustainability.”

Congratulations to Robert Nirenberg of Metropolitan Community College on being named as BEST’s newest Co-Principal Investigator! Robert has been an active BEST faculty member since 2014 and has led many building automation workshops and webinars.

Let’s wish a happy retirement to our faculty-friends who have accomplished so much with their programs and students during their stellar careers. Congratulations, Hadley Hartshorn of Laney, Jon Zeh of Sacramento City, and Bill Aylor of Miami Lakes!

Finally, BEST welcomes Graham Geweniger of Automated Logic to BEST’s National Visiting Committee, an advisory panel which meets annually to review the Center’s work and progress. As Automated Logic’s lead trainer, he brings his experience in building automation and intelligent building solutions to this esteemed group. Automated Logic has been a long-time supporter of BEST and hosted the 2015 BAS Workshop at their company headquarters in Kennesaw, GA.

Have you heard? BEST Center has joined forces with the California Institute for Energy and Environment (CIEE) at University of California – Berkeley to boost technician education nationwide. CIEE strives to advance California’s energy goals by focusing on public-interest research in energy science, technology, and policy.

With support from CIEE’s experts and resources, BEST will continue to provide professional development and leadership to community and technical colleges developing advanced educational programs in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R), building automation, and energy management.

From the press release:

“The Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) and its partners today announced the launch of the Green Buildings Career Map, an interactive career map highlighting the breadth of rewarding career opportunities in building energy efficiency. The Map was supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy Building Technologies Office, in partnership with the Building Performance Association (BPA), Community Action Partnership (CAP), Home Builders Institute (HBI), Building Performance Institute, and National Institute of Building Sciences.

The Green Buildings Career Map features 55 jobs in energy efficiency for buildings across four different industry sectors, as well as over 300 potential advancement routes—all developed with input from industry subject matter experts. By helping interested job seekers learn about quality jobs related to energy efficiency in buildings, the Green Buildings Career Map will help foster a robust and inclusive pipeline of qualified workers to meet employer demand.”
